Do our opinions of ourselves affect what others think of us? Do other’s opinions of us affect how we feel about ourselves? Use examples from the book.
I think that our opinions of ourselves do affect what others think of us. For example, if you think you are better than everyone else and you brag a lot then people won't like you. I know a couple of people like that and they don't have many friends. On the other hand, if you think you are not so great(or stupid)then others will think you are what you think you are. In the book on pg 2 little Freak in daycare was handicapped. He needed crutches and then braces on his crooked legs. Because he thought his leg braces and crutches were cool (instead of a downside), Max thought that they were cool too. I also think that others opinions of us do affect how we feel about ourselves because you think what they say is true. But not everyone affects how you feel, only those that you respect. If you do not respect the person who is speaking poorly of you, you will not care as much as if a friend spoke poorly of you. N.E. #4
I think that what you think of your self is really important. It's what gives you your self esteem, independance, and importance of taking care of your self.If you go over the top like braging to much, then that would pull people down. Say you said that you're the most smartest person in the whole school, that would be going over the top.Maybe a teacher over hears what you said, they would probally ether say,"Wow,since she is the most smartest person in the school, there shouldn't be any teachers here to help the other students. It seems like she could teach her self." Or if a student over hears, then they think,"I guess if she the smartest person in the school, then who am I? A dork?Or even dumb?Maybe I'm a nothing." I have once thought the last thought before and it TOTALLY set back my life.Let me tell you THOSE WORDS REALLY BRING YOU DOWN,AND THEY HURT.
Yes, because if someone maybe says something about you, then they probably think thats the kind of person you are. For example, lets say you got a really good grade on your test and someone else saw it, they'd probably think that you are an intellagent person. Yes, other's opinions of us affect us. For example, I know someone, and someoene else had talked behind their back and the person that i know heard them talking and you could tell they were very affected by it in a bad way. Another example is from the text when Max overhears Grim say to Gram, "how much Maxwell was getting to look so much like HIM." Which waqs found in chapter 1, page 3. You could tell that Max was very affected about this because he knows they are talking about his father and that his father is known to be "Killer Kane." ep#18
Yes it can affect you when somebody hurts your feelings. The same thing happened to me like when i was at my freinds house and i coudnt jump good on the trampiline. The book said in chapter 7 "Tony D. said to freak and Max that they are andre the giant and the dwarf. I think tthat was very mean.
Yes it can affect Ourself what others think of us by,Iike people call me small, It hurts my feelings, and on page 30 Tony D. says "Yeah, Andre the giant and the dwarf. That was mean. One other thing that affect me is my friends always beat me in games, and they brag that they one, and it gets on my nervs. I also thinks that it does not bother freak that he gets mad fun of. ht20
Well the way you act about yourself is the way that your friends will treat you. So if you act like a buuthead (in Max's case) Freak will act to you like you are a butthead. Freak always has to explain what the words ment beacause Max acted like a buuthead a Freak saw that, so he defined the word for Max to understand. On Freak's case he thinks he is to short and it just makes it worse when Max is this huge beast as big as a adult. I think Freak thinks that people think that Max is Freak's body guard which makes him fell even smaller. So both of our characters have problems just like all of us do in the world. I mean everybody has atleast 1 person that thinks of them different then who they really are.
In this book Freak thinks he is dumb (pg.7,16 and pg.19.) , but nobody else that we know of except Freak thinks or knows he is. It's the same thing with him thinking he is a butt head. I do think that sometimes other people's feelings about us affect how we think about ourselves. There are some people in my school that call me a midget but it doesn't usually get to me.
Yes, I think that the opinions of other people to us matters to some people. On pg.19 Max doesn't want to e was show that he doesn't know what Freak if talking about because he doesn't want Freak to know he's L.D.He probably doesn't want Freak to think he's dumb. (E.g.) Michel Jackson didn't like the way he was, black. So he changed his skin color to white, and his nose. I know a kid that gets teased for his size.Like Max and Freak. Max gets teased for being tall. Freak gets teased for having Morquio Syndrom(makes him very small. ES #19
Yes our opinions can affect ourseleves by if we think we are dumb we will act lake we are dumb and hide our true patenshal.Just like Max feels about himselves. Other people's opinions can make somebody feel bad because when Tony D. aka Blade called, Freak a "dwarf" and called Max,"Andre the Giant." Those are mean things and could make them feel bad about themseleves.
I think our opinions affect what others think of us because when someone thinks and says something like "Oh, my god she's such a brat." or "Who does she think she is? she's so stupid!" things like this affect peoples feelings because if someone says this about someone it stays in their head and they become what the person has said about them. I think this relates to Max because people think he's stupid so he kind of became that. For example people think he's like his father because he's starting to look like him because he's getting bigger. So, on page 41, Max thought to himself " Me rescuing Freak. What a joke, right? Except that's how it must of looked from a distance, because they never knew it was Freak who rescued me - or his genius brain and my big dumb body." Saying his dumb body is saying that he thinks he has no purpose in life. On page 43 Max's Grim called Max son, which showed him for a minute that he was wanted there because Max showed he was kind and generous. K.L. #9
I agree with N.E.#4.In the story, Tony D. thinks that he's is all big and tough, so Max is afraid of him. When Max was in preschool, he was the toughest kid and he kicked all the other kids(except Freak)and all the teachers too. That shows that Max is also big and tough, so probably Max is only scared of Tony D. because Tony D. thinks he's big and tough, which makes everyone else also think that. Once I knew someone who had a friend that always shared with her and they had such a good time together. Then one day she started to brag about EVERYTHING and she started lying and saying that she had all these things that she didn't. All of a sudden she was the most popular girl in the grade. Everyone started to be really nice to her and thought she was so cool. Then she started to think she was so cool and was the best person in the world and was really stuck-up. And now they are no longer friends. ct21
I think that our opinions do affect what other people think about us. (E.g)If some one brags about being the best student other people may think that the kid brags a lot. On page 2 freak comes in to preschool and could not walk without crutches and then he had leg braces. He thought his leg braces were cool because he could look like a robot and talk like one too. I think the opinions of are self also help use think we can make great things happen. In the book Max does not want to show freak that he has no idea what freak is talking aout because freak might think in his head that max is stupid. For example if someone is talking about someting you don't know anything about it is better to say yes I get it to look like a nerd in front of someone that is really smart. Some people might think freak is a midget or really short. Max is made fun of because he is so tall. In max's opinion he is freakd out adout becoming the same man his father is.Just beacuse freak has a disease that does not mean he should be teased for berin so sort
Yes, I think what we say to others affect how we feel affects theme if we say something mean. If you say something nice then it usualy has no affect to them in a bad way. That goes the same way when some one gives there opinion. On page 3 and 4 the grand parents said that Max is gitting more and more like his father, and that affected him because Max didn't want to be like his father, because his father is in jail and so after they said that he thought he had to change, because he thought he would go to jail if he was like his father. Also on page 29 and 30 blade calls Max and Freak Mut and Jeff, Frankenstein and Igor, and Giant and dwarf. I think that affects them becasuse, it makes Max want to be shorter and Freak want to be taller, but that cann't happen right away so it makes them feel bad. C.M.#11
I think our opinions do affect what others think of us because I know this kid that thinks he's so great at every thing. Some people think this kid is such a show off. No one is perfet or great. Some people think the opposite ofwhat you think. I agree with N.E when he said " if you brag a lot people won't like you" When Tony D teased Freak by calling him freak brain Freak is just smart he doesn't brag about it or anything. I also know that some people in other states or even high school tease people because they have different color skin or wear glasses. So, those people are offended by that. Don't care what other people say about you unless it's important.
In the book Max thinks he's dumb. He then says dumb things and people call him L.D. in a bad way like there calling him stupid. That shows that what people think of themselfs is what other people think of them. Someone I knows says stuff to me to make me feel bad. When I'm going out to have fun they can't come thet say " so your just gona go out and let me stay hear and be board out of my mind." Then I start to feel bad. Thats how other people effect other people. Note:In the book I noticed that Tony {Blade} called Max a retard and he didn't stop and think about it. Also Max doesn't care when Freak makes fun of him. I think our opinion of us do matter and affect us. I agree with N.E #4 because if you have a best friend and you are rubbing in their face that you gat a better grade and you are smarter than them then, they might not want to be friends with you anymore. That might make you feel bad if you just lost your best friend over a good grade that you . If that happens to all of the friends that you have then soon you will not have friends anymore then you ask yourself "now what do i do since i do not friends anymore, who will i play with?, who can i talk to?. On page 39 the police officer says "Hey isn't that Kenny Kane's boy? Must be. Old Killer Kane, is he still inside?". That would probaly hurt Max really hard inside because the officer might not think that hurts Max inside, but to have an officer ask you if you are a person's son or daughter and the mother or fater is in jail you would not want anyone to her it if they were near you. Plus, it would posably put you in a kind of embarrsed position.
I think that that our opinions affect what others think of us. because if you think about Max for a second since he is an L.D. he thinks he is so dumb that nobody would like him for a friend. Like N.E. # 4 said if you think you are better than everyone else and you brag a lot than people will not like you. Also for example when Max helped Freak with the Ornithopter Max was helping Freak instead of just being mean to him. He was also being kind to Freak by pulling him in the radio flyer wagon. And the last Thing of showing he was being kind was putting Freak on his shoulders when he couldn't see the fireworks. that's what makes Freak think Max is a good person in his opinion. GP # 17
I think that our opinions of ourselves do affect what people think of us. Like Max is a very tall person and he thinks he is dumb so he probly doesn't have any friends. For example I know somebody who doesn't have alot of friends so he trys to do all these that he usally doesn't do like try to act cool and be funny so no one likes him.
Opinions about yourself in your mind will sometimes make you become that. Like when Max said he wasn't smart started to make him dumber. But acctually he was smart but his opinion started to make him not believe it. When people thought he was dumb it made hime feel dumber. But then he mentions at the beginning that he chages his oppinion and starts to say "I wasn't that smart until freak let me borrow his brain.
Yes, what we think of ourselves affects what other people think of us. For example if you don't try your best in school because you don't believe you can do it, other people will think you are dumb. Just like Max is doing. If someone else says that you're inferior to them you will think that too. When Max got home after the Tony D. incident, Gram and Grim were making a big fuss about it. They were giving him coffee, ice cream and giving him respect. He then gave respect back without even thinking. jt#22
I think that what other people think of you has a big affect on what you think of your self. If the most popular kid in school thinks that you are the nerd that is really good in math, then chances are you might start to think that you are uncool and need to be more like the popular kids. Though we think this, this is not how it should be. If you have your gruop of freinds, who like you than you will be way more popular than trying to be friends with the popular kids. In this book Max is used to being made fun of becuase he is a little slow at learning things, but we are all like this in some way. Freak for example is probably one of the smartest kids in eith grade, but probably not the most athletic person. We all have our strengths and wekness. I think Max is exceting at being a great freind. Max doesn't realize it yet but he has trusted Freak comepletly. When the were escaping from Blade, he trusted that Freak had an idea of how to escape.
Yes you're opinions of yourself and other people affect you very much. If you are always saying how great you are people are not really going to like you. If other people think that you are an awful person then other people probably won't like you. Like in the book Max doesn't have any friends until Freak comes along because nobody really saw that he was a good person. On p. 13 Max helps Freak out by getting his ornithopter from the tree and Freak sees that Max is a nice guy.
well someone I know lost a friend because she gave her opinion about the friend's action's. They were bad and the person I know didn't like that. When she told her how she felt, the other person got mad and they never spoke again. In the book, Max didn't have any friends until Freak came along because of how he looked. People judge other people by their friends and I think that the person I know didn't want to be judged as a bad kid because of her friends bad behavior.
I don't think that Freak feels like he is differant, or acts like it eather because on page 30 - 31 he was standing up for himself against Tony D.(the bully.) I think that Max is verry sencitieve because on page 20 Gwen ran away from Max, probobly because he is a spitting image of his father. I think that if your friend respects you than they will tell you good things about you. I have a friend that has been egnoring me alote, and hanging out with other people. the way that she treats me makes me ask myself if there is something wrong with me. Is that how I'm really like?
